University Liaison Officer

Peter Rowlett acts as University Liaison Officer (ULO) for the IMA. Follow him on Twitter at twitter.com/peterrowlett

If you are interested in getting involved with the IMA at your university or want to ask any questions, please get in touch with him via email at peter.rowlett@ima.org.uk.

Blog

Peter is keeping a blog of his travels as ULO: Travels in a Mathematical World.

Get the Travels in a Mathematical World Podcast: in which mathematicians talk about their work and careers, and there are features on maths history and maths news roundups.

On Facebook?

If you are on Facebook, you can find the IMA Facebook group by searching “Institute of Mathematics and its Applications”.

There’s also a Facebook App to display your IMA Membership on your profile.

YouTube

You can view some maths jokes on YouTube.

We also have groups on MySpace http://groups.myspace.com/imauk and LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/701007

Students

The mathematics faculty were encouraging me to shift into mathematics as my major and explaining to me that it was not almost impossible to make a good career ... as a mathematician. So I ... became officially a student of mathematics - John Nash

This page is to highlight a little information that might be of interest to students.

About the IMA and Membership

For some information about the IMA, see the About us page.

Why join the IMA? See “Why Should You Join” in the Membership section. For information on the Student Membership grade, see the Student grade page.

Maths Careers information

There is some careers information in the Careers section. The IMA has also prepared a Careers Advice for the Mathematics Undergraduate booklet and a PowerPoint presentation of the Clement Jones Lecture Careers, which can also be downloaded as a .pdf file.

The IMA contributes to the mathscareers website. The website is a unique resource for people who are interested in finding out about the careers and opportunities that an education in mathematics can present. It covers a range of queries and careers including maths, statistics, engineering, medicine, finance, computer graphics and forensic science. It also contains useful information for teachers, parents, careers advisers and employers. The website presents maths in an interesting and informative way, showing that maths affects everything we do in our lives. Go to the mathscareers website.

The IMA also provided assistance to the author of the Prospects careers advice leaflet 'Options with mathematics'.

Careers for Mathematicians is an article by Sue Briault which appeared in Mathematics Today and includes some useful careers advice targeted to mathematics students.

The Plus careers library contains profiles of many people who have “Careers with maths” and is another good resource if you are interested in what mathematics graduates do.

If you are interested in how IMA Membership, professional development and Chartered Mathematician status can help you information is available in the Professional Affairs section.

You may have seen in your university's prospectus, or on their website, that some (if not all) of their mathematics degree programmes have been approved by the IMA and wondered what this actually means.  This has been explained on the What does Approval mean to Undergraduates and Graduates? page. See a list of approved degree programmes.

Talks and other events

Students might be interested in events run by the IMA Early Career Mathematicians Group.

The 13th Early Career Mathematicians Conference will take place in London on 20 November 2010.

Students can find local events from the Branches section, where the IMA has a Branch which is local to them. Events are typically free to attend.

Publications

As well as a range of research journals, the IMA publishes Mathematics Today, a general interest mathematics publication containing articles, reviews, reports and other news on developments in mathematics and its applications. Institute members receive six issues per year as part of their membership subscription. Find out more in the Publications section.

Students may also be interested in reading the column by Dr. Maths.

University Liaison Grants Scheme Application Form

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is keen to increase engagement of university students with the activities of the IMA. As part of this initiative a pilot scheme of small grants of up to £400 has been developed to give university student mathematical societies some funding for various activities to enhance their programme.  If your society would like to apply for a grant for particular activities please download and complete the application form [PDF]  [Word].

The Knowledge Transfer Network for Industrial Mathematics

Industrial CASE Studentships

The KTN for Industrial Mathematics, acting as an agent of EPSRC, receives an annual allocation of Industrial CASE awards to support postgraduate researchers working on new industrial-academic collaborations in mathematics. The four awards available in 2010 have been allocated to projects, with decisions on the awards having been informed by advice from the KTN's Scientific Committee and Industrial Advisory Board.

Industrial Mathematics Internships

Industrial Mathematics Internships are a new way of putting mathematics to work at the heart of business. In its current form, an Internship places a current PhD student into a company for a period of between 3 and 6 months, to carry out a stand-alone project that develops or exploits some capability in industrial mathematics.

For a student, the Programme provides an opportunity to learn about how businesses operate and to get a firsthand experience of working in industry. Industrial experience will enhance and widen employment opportunities both within and outside academia.

Coventry University Applied Mathematics Research Centre

PhD studentship in Mythological Networks

Three year studentship funded by the Leverhulme Trust

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in unique interdisciplinary research involving statistical physics and mythology, leading to a PhD degree. The work is fully funded by a prestigious Leverhulme research grant. The research will involve analysing the structure of various mythologies from a mathematical/physical/statistical point of view.

Closing date 10 September 2010.
