Online Event: IMA 16+ ‘What it’s like to study Mathematics at University’ Conference 2021

What is the conference about?

In this 16+ Conference, we will answer all your questions of what it’s like to study Mathematics at University. Ranging from university application and interviews to key tips for entering the field of mathematics at an early career stage, you will get a chance to hear from some current students and guest speakers what their research entails. Find out what it means to be an Actuarial Scientist or how maths can be applied to understand asymptotic expansions.

We will explore what being a student mathematician entails and the beauty of its understanding to take it further into a career. Bridging the gap between your current education and future opportunities, this conference aims to bring to you the toolkit to fully understand what it means to take your next step towards becoming a mathematician, not a calculator. You will also have a chance to ask our amazing panellists many questions you may have of what it’s like studying mathematics and future career routes in our live Q&A session.

Invited Speakers

Shamia Sanjania
Currently a second year of a BSc Mathematics degree at the University of Leicester, she is actively engaged in a range of student support activities from being the STEM Champion, Lead of Diversity to Lead Mentor at her University. During the pandemic, her roles inspired her to build her platform Women in Maths, where she aims to inspire and support younger women into the field of mathematics by providing resources, posting blogs and sharing opportunities for students of all ages to get involved and has now also joined the IMA ECM committee as a Co-Opted member.

Lance Carr
Lance Carr current reads for an undergraduate master’s degree in mathematics at Nottingham Trent University. He has worked extensively in retail and corporate customer service and has a passion for people. Both a paid and volunteer mentor in several roles to fellow students, how mathematics is taught and represented in schools and what effect this has on the image of mathematics is of particular interest. An ambassador for the School of Science and Technology as well as running the mathematics society; Lance has represented his peers on several levels including the electoral commission of the students’ union and the information systems students’ committee. Passionate about all areas of problem solving, he is also heavily involved in music having earned a scholarship to study this further. Languages, karate and computing are amongst his other key interests underpinning a thirst for knowledge and a love of diversity.

Mungo Aitken
Mungo is doing a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on acoustics and solid mechanics with applications such as reducing noise emissions from the hulls of underwater vehicles. He is a co‐founder of the Solid Mechanics research group at DAMTP. As somebody with a cochlear implant, he also has a keen interest in improving accessibility to academia for everybody. In his spare time, he enjoys playing badminton, rowing and sailing on the Norfolk Broads.

Faduma Abdi
She is a 2020 graduate in Mathematics from the University of Leicester, currently working as a teacher in a local secondary school, as well as the founder of a tutoring agency – FMCtutors, which focuses on small group online tuition.

Margaret Duff
Margaret is a 3rd year PhD student at the University of Bath researching how machine learning models that generate data can be used in mathematical problems in imaging. Alongside her PhD she has organised student conferences, chairs the SIAM-IMA Bath student chapter, has presented her research in parliament and enjoys getting involved in outreach and working with industry. Before her PhD, she did an undergraduate and masters degree in mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Outside of maths, she is a Guide and Cub Scout leader, enjoys running and swimming and took up crochet during the lockdown.

Joely To
Joely is an A Level student passionate about empowering more females into studying maths beyond school, including going into maths-related careers. She founded Pioneer, a non-profit organisation, to achieve this aim through articles, competitions and work experience events.

Hannah Amliwala
Hannah is a mathematician studying at the University of Leicester. She is a proud member of Women in Mathematics and course representative of undergraduates for the last 2 years. She has keen interests in music, dance and art. Hannah aspires to be a leader in business.

Dr Jenny Macey
Jenny thoroughly enjoyed her year as the IMA’s Diversity Champion. She continues to passionately support outreach and diversity projects for the IMA and our wider mathematics community. She studied Maths and Physics for her Undergraduate Masters and then completed a PhD in Numerical Analysis. She works in industry as a Computational Physicist.

Stella Robinson
Stella is an Undergraduate at The University of Manchester studying Mathematics with an Industrial year, currently on her sandwich year working as a Mathematical Modeller. Over the past 6 months of her year in industry she has developed skills in Coding, Fluid Mechanics and Numerical Methods. Stella is proud to be a woman in STEM and is a STEM Ambassador. Outside of mathematics, Stella enjoys walking, cooking and playing netball with her maths society.

Leena Sodha
Leena is a qualified Pensions Actuary (Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries) with 15 years industry experience now working at the University of Leicester to shape actuarial education and prepare mathematicians and actuaries of the future. It’s a known fact girls are talented mathematicians, yet they only account for 25% of qualified actuaries and the Actuarial Profession has been a difficult one to enter for no good reason. Women are underrepresented and Leena’s challenge is to change perception and demonstrate women can succeed in male dominated mathematical professions! At the University, Leena is responsible for leading the School’s Mathematics and Actuarial Science programmes with a key focus on employability skills. In Leena’s view, it’s all about ‘Bridging the Gap’ between University and Industry!
