Careers

Mathematics is a language. - Josiah Willard Gibbs

Welcome to the IMA careers home page aimed at providing information relevant to persons interested in finding out about employability, work and jobs associated with mathematicians. It is designed to provide key information, case studies and useful web links associated with careers paths such as taken by IMA members. It is anticipated that helpful information is obtainable to people at various ages of their life; those taking mathematics at school or college, those thinking of taking mathematics at university, or mathematics graduates looking for a first job or seeking a change.

The IMA along with the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and Royal Statistical Society (RSS) forming The Council for the Mathematical Science (CMS) has launched a website on careers in mathematics called MathsCareers. The website is a unique resource for young people of all ages, from Key Stage three to graduate level, who are interested in finding out about the careers and opportunities that an education in mathematics can present. It covers a range of queries and careers including maths, statistics, engineering, medicine, finance, computer graphics and forensic science. It also contains useful information for teachers, parents, careers advisers and employers. The website presents maths in an interesting and informative way, showing that maths affects everything we do in our lives. You can visit MathsCareers at http://www.mathscareers.org.uk/
