The Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications (IMA) notes with concern the recent reductions to the UK science and research budget. We endorse the statement made by the Science Council and join our sister societies across the STEM landscape in highlighting the long-term consequences these financial constraints will have on the UK’s research ecosystem.
Reductions in funding for major research facilities and interdisciplinary centres have a severe secondary effect on the mathematical sciences. When observational studies are scaled back or datasets become restricted, the collaborative networks that fuel applied mathematics are constrained. To develop novel, impactful mathematical models, mathematicians require robust, high-quality data and sustained collaboration with experimentalists. Reducing infrastructure funding across the broader STEM landscape limits the opportunities for mathematical scientists to apply their expertise to complex biological, environmental, and engineering challenges. More directly, many fields within the wider mathematical sciences rely on high-performance computing facilities to stay at the forefront of research.
Curiosity-led research is especially vulnerable in the current funding climate. The pathway from theoretical discovery to practical application is rarely linear. Breakthroughs that begin as purely abstract inquiries often take years, or even decades, to mature into the tools required to solve real-world problems. Historically, foundational work in geometry, topology, and number theory—pursued without any immediate industrial application in mind—eventually became the bedrock of modern cryptography, data science, and telecommunications. The synergies also work in reverse: questions in applied mathematics, arising from cross-disciplinary collaborations, often have deeper mathematical links with unsuspected areas of mathematics, becoming the foundation of more research. A funding environment that disproportionately favours short-term, application-driven projects risks stalling the very discoveries necessary for future innovation, and will drive researchers away from deeper and fundamental questions.
The UK maintains a strong international standing in the mathematical sciences, a position supported by a historically balanced approach to funding a broad range of research projects, from curiosity-led to knowledge exchange and industrial mathematics. Short-term financial reductions that disrupt this balance risk having long-lasting effects.
We appreciate the difficult nature and pressures on funding decisions which governments are facing in a challenging economic climate. The IMA remains committed to working constructively with the Science Council, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), the government, and our partners to navigate these challenges and support a resilient research community.
