Supporting the IMA
The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is a charity incorporated by Royal Charter. A major requirement of the charter is that the Institute should promote mathematics for the benefit of society, and a great deal of the activity of the IMA is aimed precisely at this goal.
The IMA promotes mathematics research by explaining the relevance and importance of contemporary research. The IMA is very active in encouraging students to take qualifications in the mathematical sciences and to follow this with a career in a mathematically relevant activity. The IMA supports mathematics education at all levels; it closely monitors the school curriculum and makes its view clear to Government; it supports teachers through the CMathTeach designation. In addition, mathematics is promoted at science fairs, conferences and through public engagement events.
Clearly, these activities require considerable financial support and a significant portion of the limited resources of the IMA are expended in this work. Most people involved in the mathematics community would consider the promotional activities described above to be very worthwhile. If this is your view, you might wish to consider making a donation to the IMA. The IMA has charitable status and so donations made to it, may attract tax relief. For UK tax payers this is available under Gift Aid. A form is available for giving by cheque, credit card or direct debit.
Leaving a Legacy
Alternatively you may continue to express your support by leaving a legacy which would help the IMA to extend its activities and continue to make the case for mathematics. As a registered charity, any bequest made is deducted from your estate prior to the levy of inheritance tax, and you would have the satisfaction of knowing that a part of your estate had been used as very valued support to an activity which has played a significant and rewarding role in your life.
All donations will be acknowledged by the Trustees and in Mathematics Today (unless anonymity is preferred).
