Governance

The governing body of the Institute is Council whose membership consists of the immediate three Past Presidents together with not less than 22 and not more than 28 other members consisting of the seven Honorary Officers, 15 Members elected by Corporate Members and not more than six members co-opted by Council. The officers are appointed by Council.

Council meets three times a year and takes a strategic overview of the policies and development of the Institute. The operational control of the Institute is managed through the Executive Board.

The IMA also has various committees which have strategic or statutory functions.

Royal Charter

In 1990 the Institute was incorporated by Royal Charter and was subsequently granted the right to award Chartered Mathematician status.

On the 5 November 2008 Privy Council granted the right to amend the Charter and Byelaws so that a register of Chartered Mathematics Teachers be established by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, to be operated together with or without other mathematics societies to award the designation of Chartered Mathematics Teacher to applicants who are suitably qualified.

Privy Council approved amendments to the Royal Charter and its Byelaws, with effect from 1 July 2015, which include the extension Corporate Membership of the Institute to Associate, Affiliate and Student Members and the creation of two categories of Corporate Members: Advanced Members and General Members.

Committees and Staff Profiles

Conferences Committee

The purpose of the committee is to supervise the Institute's programme of international conferences.

Council

Council meets three times a year and takes a strategic overview of the policies and development of the Institute.

Early Career Mathematicians Committee

The aim of the IMA Early Career Mathematicians Committee is to provide a focus for the ideas and activities of the ECM Group, and to engage, empower and mobilise its membership in supporting the IMA’s charitable aims of promoting Mathematics.

Executive Board

The operational control of the Institute is managed through the Executive Board. The membership includes the President, Honorary Officers and Executive Director. Each member has a specific area of responsibility.

IMA Staff

The Institute has a secretariat based in Southend-on-Sea. The Executive Director is the head of paid staff and responsible for the secretariat. Her role is to advise Council, its officers and committees, and to make sure their decisions are implemented.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee is delegated by the Council to manage the granting of membership grades and the Chartered Mathematician and Chartered Scientist designations.

Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee is responsible for creating and managing inclusive, transparent processes for nominating qualified individuals to the IMA Council and its committees. Additionally, it oversees and proposes nominations for internal and external awards and roles, in line with its delegated authority.

Research Committee

The purpose of the Research Committee is to promote the needs of mathematics and applied mathematics research.
