IMA Mathematics 2021 Online Series – Week Two


For a number of years, the IMA has been running a series of conferences to promote mathematics with the aim of demonstrating to both mathematicians and non-mathematicians the many uses of modern mathematics. Following last summer’s very successful IMA Mathematics 2020 series collaboration with the Newton Gateway to Mathematics, we are pleased to announce two events for 2021 taking place this May.

On Tuesday 25th May, we will have two talks which feature the work of V-KEMS (Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in Mathematical Sciences). Presentations will feature the work of two very successful virtual study groups, which ran earlier this year, on Reducing the Risk of Covid-19 Transmission on Trains and Modelling Solutions to the Impact of COVID-19 on Cardiovascular Waiting Lists.

10.40-11.10 – Alan Champneys (University of Bristol) – Modelling Solutions to the impact of COVID-19 on Cardiovascular Waiting Lists

Abstracts

Chris Budd– Reducing the Risk of Covid-19 Transmission on Trains

Amid the Covid-19 outbreak, the rail industry was looking to develop methods that could quantify the risk of transmission on trains, for both passengers and staff. The use of the UK National Rail fell as low as 4% in late April 2020 and in the New Year was only operating at around 30%. Interested researchers and other stakeholders came together to explore how mathematics might help solve the challenges around the risks. The work involved detailed simulations of the way the virus could potentially spread through airflow, from touching contaminated surfaces and being close, to someone infected with the virus.

Alan Champneys – Modelling Solutions to the impact of COVID-19 on Cardiovascular Waiting Lists

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for men in the UK and second-most for women. During the first lockdown from March 2020, elective cardiac procedures and many outpatient consultations were postponed and a substantial number of appointments have not yet been rescheduled. In addition, those who were suffering from these conditions did not present to their GP or hospital – either because they did not want to impact further on NHS resources, or through concern of being exposed to the virus. This talk highlights the work of the researchers and clinicians to provide further insight into these complex challenges through a variety of mathematical approaches.

The fees go towards covering staff costs, and the cost of software licence fees required to run the conference.
