IMA Annual Report, AGM 2026 Notice and Voting

The IMA’s Annual Trustees Report 2025 is now available, It merges the IMA’s Annual Report, Trustees’ Report and Financial Statements into one reference document.

  • Part One focuses on direct impact of the IMA’s activities in support of mathematics and our public benefit objectives.
  • Part Two provides Finance, Governance and Risk information, the Financial Review 2025, the 2025 Financial Statements and Notes to the Accounts.
  • Part Three summarises our external links and partnerships with other bodies in support of our Mission.

2025 marked a key year in the IMA’s history as we moved from our Southend-on-Sea headquarters of over 30 years to serviced, leased offices nearby. Our new workspace makes the most of the hybrid working patterns which the IMA, like many organisations, have adopted post-pandemic. The space is lighter and brighter with team meeting facilities and access to a boardroom for collaborative working to make the most of time in the office. The move enables the team to focus more attention on delivering our activities, away from building maintenance and upkeep which had become increasingly challenging and resource intensive. Following completion of the sale of Catherine Richards House in December, the proceeds have been invested with the CCLA to help generate additional income for the IMA in the coming years.

We also embarked on a major project in support of the digital transformation goals laid out in our 2023-28 strategy to select a new CRM to underpin digital growth. In January, we appointed a membership CRM specialist consultancy to guide us through the process, helping us define our requirements and the tender process to identify a suitable vendor. We are excited that our preferred solution also offers an integrated new website and ‘myIMA’ platform space for members and other users. This integrated approach will both help streamline staff tasks and contribute to creating a greater sense of belonging and engagement among our community. The new website and CRM are planned to go live later this year.

Meanwhile, we have grown our efforts to support the maths community of today and tomorrow. Our maths-themed, interactive stands at the 2025 Big Bang, NEC, Birmingham, RAF Museums’ Forces in STEM events in London and Cosford and the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) STEMZone, Fairford, reached hundreds of young people, teachers and parents, showcasing career pathways in mathematics.

A major highlight in our education programmes was becoming the lead partner for the Levelling Up: Mathematics programme whose aim is to provide free, additional tuition for Maths A Level students from underserved backgrounds, delivered by local undergraduate students. With many UK Maths Departments facing challenges, we worked closely with the programme founder, Dr Tony Hill FIMA and IMA members to develop a new, short course version of the programme. This has received a hugely positive response from the HE community, with 16 HEIs confirming their intention to start in 2026.

Another exciting chapter began with the official launch of our new Climate, Environment and Sustainability Special Interest Group (SIG) on 23 September in London. The response to the revitalisation of IMA SIGs has been fantastic; the Mathematics of AI SIG gathered pace over the year, focusing on their 2026 conference this September. A Maths and EDI SIG is being launched this year while work is also underway to develop SIGs in Defence and Security and Education.

Bringing together contributors from academia, industry, government, the SIGs will provide a vehicle to highlight the vital role of mathematics in solving today’s scientific, technological, economic and social challenges.

Looking ahead to 2026, highlights include creating a new Professional Standards Board to oversee our chartered and professional designations, an International Working Group to develop our international reach, and taking forward the IMA Foundation to enable further opportunities to support our community.

As always, our work is only possible with the tireless dedication and contributions of our volunteers, drawn from our incredible membership, and hard-working staff. Our sincere thanks to all our volunteers, staff and supporters over 2025 for these fantastic achievements.
