Beautiful Music – an Amazing Mathematical Fluke? a talk by Malcolm Savage, Director, Savoir Limited (Railway Technology Solutions)
Annual Sixth Form Lecture
Abstract
In this talk, Malcolm will attempt the (almost) impossible – to define beautiful music. The underlying mathematics is fascinating, yet beguilingly simple, and leads to a very surprising new conclusion about the existence of music itself.
The talk will be illustrated by examples of recorded music, from the Beatles to Beethoven, and live instruments.
After reading Maths at Cambridge, Malcolm initially worked as a numerical analyst for a computer supplier, but most of his career has been in the railway industry specialising in control systems. He is now the Director of a small specialist railway consultancy company.
He has always been interested in music of all kinds, and particularly enjoys listening to Alfred Brendel performances. From time to time he supplemented his British Rail income by playing the piano at local pubs. (The last remark refers to Malcolm, not, as far as we know, to Alfred Brendel!)
