Feature Extraction and Image Processing for Computer Vision, 3rd editionThis book is the third edition of Feature Extraction and Image Processing for Computer Vision. The first observation of this book is that the page number has considerably increased over the first two editions. The main changes are as follows: a) A completely new chapter on moving object detection, tracking and analysis, b) Updated material on Viola-Jones, SURF, SIFT and Haar wavelets, c) Vastly updated literature review, (d) Development of symmetry operators and (e) Expanded coverage of distance measures and classification.

This book is specifically aimed at feature extraction in image processing and computer vision. As far as this reviewer is aware this is the only book in publication that does so. The chapter titles are as follows 1) Introduction, 2) Frequency domain processing, 3) Basic Image Processing Operations, 4) Low level feature extraction, 5) High level feature extraction: fixed shape matching, 6) High level feature extraction: Deformable shape analysis, 7) Object description, 8) Texture Segmentation and Classification, 9) Moving Object detection and description, 10) Camera Geometry, 11) Least square analysis and 12) Principal Component Analysis.

The book is supported by code for MathCad and Matlab. At the time of writing, early November 2012, the supporting website supplied material for the second edition of this book i.e. it did not support the book under review. The website would benefit from updated material and some worked examples that would illustrate the principles outlined in the book would be of benefit too.

In this reviewer’s opinion the suggested target audience outlined in the book does a disservice to the authors. The target audience is much wider than that suggested as many of the techniques mentioned could be applied by the remote sensing community. The mathematical element is presented in a non-mathematical way thus making the content more accessible. The book would not be suitable for an introductory course in image processing as it assumes a certain competence in image processing fundamentals. That said this edition is a very welcome addition to image extraction.
