Gerd Faltings Wins the 2026 Abel Prize

Great mathematical achievement moves our whole community forward. This month, that achievement belongs to Professor Gerd Faltings.

The 2026 Abel Prize has honoured his groundbreaking work, which has given mathematicians new ways to understand some of the most challenging problems involving the interplay of numbers and geometry.
For decades, researchers grappled with questions about when certain equations have only a limited number of rational solutions. The mathematical world waited more than 60 years for an answer and Professor Faltings provided one, resolving the famous Mordell conjecture and opening new avenues for research across arithmetic geometry.

Why does this matter?

Breakthroughs like his don’t just solve old problems, they equip the global mathematical community with new insight, new tools, and new directions. The Abel Prize recognises this kind of lasting impact, celebrating mathematicians whose work elevates the entire field.

As part of our ongoing commitment to highlight excellence across the mathematical sciences, we’re delighted to share this news and invite you to read the full citation from the Abel Prize Committee.
