How to Win $1,000,000, a talk by Alan Stevens (IMA Council and formerly Rolls-Royce)
Abstract
The Clay Mathematics Institute is offering $1,000,000 for the solution of any of 7 mathematical problems. One of these is the proof or otherwise of the Riemann Hypothesis. This talk does not attempt to provide a solution to this problem! However, for those desperate to have a go but knowing nothing about the problem, it aims to provide a simple, visual introduction to what it’s all about.
It might also illuminate the context in which Srinivasa Ramanujan’s expression: 1+2+3+… = -1/12, though silly, is not quite as silly as you first think!”
Alan, formerly of Rolls-Royce, is now retired. He is a Fellow of the IMA and a member of the IMA Council.
No charge is made to attend meetings; non-IMA members are welcome
