Early Career Mathematicians Committee Role

The Immediate Past Chair’s role is to support and advise the new chair and committee, and to provide continuity in the running of the committee and the group as a whole.

Nicholas graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics in 2015, and with an MSc in Applied Mathematics in 2016, both from the University of Manchester. Since the start of 2017 he has been employed by Rolls-Royce Plc gaining experience as a mathematician in industry across the nuclear, civil aerospace, and defence aerospace sectors. He is currently a Member of both the IMA and the Royal Aeronautical Society, and he is registered as both a Chartered Mathematician and a Chartered Engineer.

Nicholas first joined the IMA in 2016 as an Associate Member, he then served as the Junior Vice Chair of the East Midlands branch of the IMA between 2018 and 2020, and he has been a member of the IMA’s Communications Committee since 2018. Currently, he is the Chair of the South West and Wales branch of the IMA, previously known as the West of England branch, having held the position since moving to Bristol in August 2020. Since taking over as Chair he has led a drive to reinvigorate and expand the branch which has included liaising with universities in Cardiff and Swansea to create the IMA’s first permanent presence in Wales.

Nicholas is very passionate about communicating mathematics to younger audiences with the aim of hopefully inspiring them to pursue it in their studies or as a career. In addition to this he also wishes to strengthen connections between the IMA and industry to assist current mathematics students seeking employment, and to help mathematics graduates working outside of academia to feel a sense of identity as mathematicians.
