The QJMAM Fund for Applied Mathematics
The QJMAM fund for Applied Mathematics exists to support UK research in the broad area of applied mathematics and theoretical mechanics. The fund will be administered by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, but decisions on the award of grants will be made by a panel appointed by the Trustees, chaired by Professor Andrew Norris.
Anyone is eligible to apply.
There will be two application rounds in 2024:
Round 1 – Applications open 1st February 2024 and close at midnight 29th February
Round 2 – Applications open 1st August 2024 and close at midnight on 31st August
We expect up to £40k to be available for award at each round. Priority will be given to applications that clearly enhance the fields of theoretical mechanics and applied mathematics in the UK, and award recipients will be encouraged to report their research findings in QJMAM.
Applications are invited under the following headings.
Conference and workshop organisation.
Grants may be awarded to provide partial support for conferences or workshops to be held in the UK. Requests to support the attendance of early career researchers and PhD students will be given high priority.
Conference travel.
Grants may be awarded to enable speakers based in the UK to attend national and international conferences; the Trustees are particularly keen to increase the number (and hence visibility) of active UK participants at major relevant conferences such as ICTAM, ICIAM, EUROMECH, etc.
Collaborative research visits.
Grants may be awarded for short research visits from or to the UK, or within the UK.
Academic-industrial collaborations.
Grants may be awarded to support new interactions.
Applications should be made online via myIMA. You will need to create an account if you do not have one. Once you are logged in select ‘Grants’ from the drop down menu titled ‘Me and the IMA’. A decision on the award of a grant will usually be given one – two month of the appropriate deadline.
Candidates should be mindful of the IMA statement on Women in Mathematics. We require that candidates undertake a proper consideration of gender balance when preparing applications for conference funding.
Costs associated with childcare are allowable where this would enable someone to participate who would otherwise be unable to do so.
If you are a previous recipient of an award from the QJMAM Trust, the panel would like to hear about any publications or other outputs that resulted from the support given and, in particular, whether any papers have been submitted to QJMAM.
Grants will not be awarded for events that have already taken place.
There is no upper limit on the amount that can be applied for (within the amount available). However, costs must be fully justified. Candidates who are awarded grants are required to submit a report within two months of completion of the activity.
Decisions will be made against the following criteria:
- Scientific excellence
- Benefit to the UK mathematics community
- Value for money
