Do you love the idea of explaining Maths to youngsters?  Does your passion for Maths drive you?  Do you want to change the perception of Maths?  Then why not awaken your potential and apply for the Maths Teacher Training Scholarship Scheme?

We welcome applications from people who can become passionate, knowledgeable and talented teachers to inspire and enthuse future generations.

Scholarship Criteria

To apply for a Scholarship, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • You qualify as a home student for the purpose of provision of student support,
  • You have or expect to:
    • Achieve a 1st, 2:1 or postgraduate degree (Masters/PhD)  in a subject with a strong mathematical content.  Applications are also welcomed from candidates with a  2:2 degree if combined with significant relevant experience, or;
    • Have completed or will complete a Maths Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course (SKE) prior to September 2018, or;
    • Have a non-mathematical degree with extensive mathematical professional experience
  • Secure a training place on an eligible Secondary Mathematics PGCE or unsalaried School Direct mathematics course in England which leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) status for the 2018/19 academic year

Please be aware that if you don’t have a Maths degree you may need to provide degree transcripts to demonstrate the mathematical and statistical content of your degree.  Equally, if you have an overseas degree you will need a NARIC equivalency statement to assist your application.  Alternatively, please use the government’s overseas degree equivalency table. This table can can also be used to establish the equivalent UK degree classification of an overseas qualification.

Furthermore, if you are on an SKE course we recommend that you complete this if possible before you come to an Assessment Centre.  This is to assist you with regards to the mathematical knowledge you will need to show as part of the overall assessment process.

For all applicants, please be aware scholarship funding is not available for trainees who want to take up a teacher training place, on a course that leads to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status (QTLS). QTLS is a Further Education qualification (post-16) and you are not eligible for Scholarship funding if you plan to take up a place on a QTLS course.

For funding or a Scholarship you must be intending to take up a training place on a secondary teaching course that leads to QTS (pre-16).

If you have any questions about any aspect of your eligibility to apply, or the scheme in general, please contact the Scholarship Team who will be happy to help.

Scholarship Community

Over the years that the scheme has been running, a thriving social media community has developed on Twitter and Facebook, and we are now on Instagram and LinkedIn. The Mathematics Teacher Training Scholarship Scheme website gives more detail about all the Scheme can offer in addition to the tax free support such as membership of professional bodies; training courses and access to resources.

When you’re ready to apply to the Mathematics Scholarship Scheme then complete the online application form. We cannot accept hard copies of the application form. In addition to this, you cannot save an application when you’re part way through its completion so we recommend using the sample application form to prepare your application.

This year there are six rounds of applications that end on the 23rd July 2018. Last year, we received an overwhelming high number of applications, which resulted in us having to close the Scheme earlier than planned.  If this occurs again, then we will close early again.  You are advised to submit your application as soon as possible.

If you’re unsuccessful at any stage you cannot reapply in the current application year.
