Congratulations to Professor Alan Champneys CMath FIMA, who is awarded the 2018 Catherine Richards Prize for his brilliant article, Westward Ho! Musing on Mathematics and Mechanics: Permutation Poetry and Chaotic Collaboration, which was published in the December 2018 issue of Mathematics Today.
Alan’s Westward Ho! series has been a big hit over the last two years, with pieces on a range of mathematical topics, which often emphasise collaboration in unexpected places. This has not only included the sestina (permutation poetry), but also automated farming, synchronisation and maths in biomedical research.

Professor Champneys is a professor of applied non-linear mathematics at the University of Bristol, where he recently received a certificate for 25 years’ service.
Alan is also an active member of the IMA. He is an Editor of the IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics, a member of the Research Committee, and chairs a task and finish group responding to the Bond Review of Knowledge Exchange. He was a collaborator of Sam Parc, editor the IMA’s anniversary book, 50 Visions of Mathematics.
