IMA Early Career Mathematicians’ Autumn Conference 2019

Do you want to discover what your mathematics future could look like? Are you keen to meet and network with your mathematical peers? Then you can do so with the IMA! Come along to the 2019 Early Career Mathematicians’ Autumn Conference on Saturday 26th October at the University of Bristol.

What is the conference about?

The conference will interest mathematicians early in their career, be it in academia or industry, as well as students of mathematical sciences, and those with an interest in the subject. It will feature six plenary talks from distinguished speakers covering a wide range of subjects, as well as activities to allow for interaction among the attendees and speakers.

This is a perfect opportunity to learn about fascinating areas of mathematics (and their applications) from people that work on them, whilst also providing you the chance to become more involved with a professional body of mathematics. There will be plenty of time to network during and after the conference, allowing you the opportunity to meet people with similar interests and find out more about the wide range of careers that are available.

The attendees taking the lead!

By popular request, this year we will be bringing back the ‘Unconference’. This is an interactive experience in which delegates will take charge of the conference programming. We will have several rooms set aside for break out-sessions and delegates will be able to run their sessions, suggest sessions for other people to run or join in one of our pre-prepared sessions. In previous years these sessions have ranged from talks about interesting areas of maths, to careers workshops, to discussions about how best to do maths outreach. If you think you might want to lead or suggest a session but are unsure about the process, you can email us in advance, but also feel free to just show up on the day with your ideas.

Invited Speakers

Prof Chris Budd OBE (University of Bath) – ‘Mathematical models for the ice ages’

Prof Alan Champneys (University of Bristol) – ‘Mathematical modelling as a career and overcoming the Imposter syndrome’

Dr Stavros Kasinos (Imperial College London) – ‘Mathematical modelling of structural systems to extreme loads’

Prof Noah Linden (University of Bristol) – ‘Quantum Computing’

Dr Jenny Macey (Computational Physicist, Mathematical Modeller and IMA Diversity Champion) – ‘Walk into a room and smile’
