Supporting Postgraduates who Teach Mathematics & Statistics – Cambridge

Introduction

In conjunction with the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (Cambridge) the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is delighted to announce that it will again be offering two free one-day workshops for postgraduate students who teach mathematics and statistics.

The two identical one-day events will cover issues such as planning and preparing for teaching, facilitating problem solving classes, encouraging participation and providing support, and assessing student work and providing feedback. One of the sessions will allow participants to discuss any issues, challenges or concerns they may have in relation to their teaching duties, and to allow an opportunity for them to seek solutions both from fellow delegates and the session facilitators, both of whom are experienced higher education teachers of mathematics from the University of Birmingham.

Registration

Due to the support of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences there is no fee for participating in this event although we are unable to assist with travel expenses. Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

Please note, at previous workshops there have been instances of delegates registering and then subsequently failing to attend without prior notice which has meant their place cannot be allocated to others. Where delegates register but fail to attend without providing a minimum of 48 hours notice, a charge of £75 will be made to their department to cover the costs of their attendance.

Due to the limited availability, registration in advance is essential. This must be completed online using myIMA which can also be accessed via the link below:

16 October 2019, Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge

Please note that your registration details will be used by the organisers. If you are an IMA Member or you have previously registered for an IMA conference, then you are already on our database. Please “request a new password” using the email address previously used, to log in.

Certification

The Higher Education Services Area Committee of the IMA has reviewed the content and specification of the 2019 Postgraduate Workshops to the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education1.

As a consequence, the IMA will provide all participants who complete the workshop in full, and who are either current members of the Institute or who become members within one month of the date of the workshop, with an electronic certificate confirming they have completed 4.5 hours of learning activities and that demonstrates how these activities align with the dimensions of the UKPSF. It is hoped that such certification will enable participants to receive recognition towards their own institutional training programmes as a result of attending this workshop.

For participants who are not members of the IMA, a certificate of participation is available for a fee of £50.

Supporting Resources

The workshop will be interactive in nature, but a freely available handbook has been produced to support these events:
