Paralogy, Pivoting, Pursuing: Ways to Calculate pi, a talk by Alan Stevens CMath FIMA

Abstract

That most ubiquitous number, pi, the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle, is irrational, with a decimal expansion known to over 30 trillion places.  There are many ways to calculate finite approximations to pi; we will consider four of the somewhat stranger ones in this talk, involving needles, beams, blocks and fractals.  We will stop well short of 30 trillion places!
