IMA Hedy Lamarr Prize 2021 – Call for Nominations

Nominations for the inaugural award of the IMA Hedy Lamarr Prize for Knowledge Exchange in Mathematics and its Applications are invited from 1 October 2020 until the closing date of 31 January 2021, via the online nomination form below.

Hedy Lamarr (1914–2000), after whom the prize was named, was both a famous Hollywood actress and an inventor.  Versions of the frequency-hopping system, intended for use in torpedoes during WWII, which Hedy Lamarr invented jointly with George Antheil are incorporated into the Bluetooth technology which pervades modern life.

This new IMA prize is intended to reward knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences in all its possible forms.  Contributions that can be considered vary greatly and might take the form of one of the following, or of something else beyond the ideas of the originators of the award:

  • Creation of new links between academia and industry
  • A single mathematical idea which has transformed activity beyond academia
  • A sustained contribution to inspiring, enhancing and supporting knowledge exchange in the mathematical sciences

Prize Details

  • The winner will receive £1,000, a silver medal and a certificate.  Normally a single award will be made on each occasion. If, exceptionally, a joint award is made, the £1,000 prize will be equally split between the winners.
  • Nominees may not nominate themselves. Nominations may only be made by MIMAs (IMA Member grade) or FIMAs (IMA Fellow grade).
  • Nominees need not be existing MIMAs (IMA Member Grade) or FIMAs (IMA Fellow Grade). However, award winners are reasonably expected to become Members (MIMAs) or Fellows (FIMAs) of the IMA if not already so.
  • The winner may be required to give a lecture and / or attend a presentation ceremony.
