Thursday 18th September 2003. Deriving Optimal Settings for Surround Sound Systems. A talk by Bruce Wiggins (University of Derby). 7.30 p.m. in the Heap Lecture Theatre, Kedleston Road Site, University of Derby.
Abstract: Multi speaker systems are becoming more available but to obtain real sound reproduction the speaker settings have to be optimised. This talk describes a new approach to the determination of these settings.
Tuesday 18th November 2003. Computer Assisted Marking using the Internet. A talk by Chris Sangwin (School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Birmingham). 7.30 p.m. in Room GE004, Clifton Site, Main Building, The Nottingham Trent University.
Abstract: This talk reports some recent developments in mathematical computer aided assessment which involve computer algebra marking of students’ work using the internet. Technical and educational issues raised by computer algebra marking are addressed. Claims are justified with working examples in core calculus and algebra which have been set to first year university students.
Wednesday 21st January 2004. Statistics on Trial. A talk by Helen Joyce (Editor of Plus Online Magazine, Millennium Mathematics Project, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, University of Cambridge). 7.30 p.m. in Room J001, Edward Herbert Building, Loughborough University.
Abstract: With the advent of DNA profiling, statistics are being quoted in court more and more often. But, after high-profile cases such as that of Sally Clark, jailed for life for the murder of two of her children after highly misleading statistical evidence was presented by a paediatrician, and recently released after her second appeal, can we trust courts to treat statistics properly?
In this talk I will examine the “1 in 73 million” statistic quoted in Sally Clark’s trial and explain where it came from, and just what is wrongwith it. The talk should be intelligible to the general public.
Thursday 19th February 2004. Modelling Internet Packet Traffic. A talk by Professor D. Arrowsmith (Queen Mary, London). 7.30 p.m. in the Queens Building, De Montfort University, Leicester.
Saturday 6th March 2004. Branch Dinner at Midland Hotel, Midland Road, Derby (opposite Derby Railway Station). Meet 7.30 p.m. in the Main Bar for a meal starting 8.00 p.m.
The Branch Dinner is an informal event to provide a congenial atmosphere to meet with fellow members of the IMA and their guests. Many members will attend with their partners. Vegetarian or other special dietary requirements can be catered for with prior notice. Wines and other drinks are available on a cash basis.
Thursday 25th March 2004. The Mathematics of Road Collision Investigation. A talk by Dr. Roy Smith (De Montfort University). 7.30 p.m. in Room GE004, George Eliot Building, Clifton Campus, The Nottingham Trent University.
Abstract: Dr Smith has provided a collision reconstruction service for solicitors and others since 1990. This involves producing reports on specific accidents and giving evidence in court as an expert witness. The reports are written for non-mathematicians but rely significantly on various calculations. The talk will briefly review the role of expert witnesses. It will then illustrate the mathematics behind: the calculations of a vehicle speed from its skid marks, collision calculations based on momentum and on the damage to the vehicles, and the calculation of a vehicle speed from the distance which a pedestrian is projected as a result of a collision. The talk will be suitable for interested VI formers.
Thursday 20th May 2004. The Wonderful Physics of Gyroscopes and Boomerangs. A talk by Hugh Hunt (Cambridge University). 7.30 p.m. in Room B23, Maths & Physics Building, Nottingham University.
Abstract: Have you ever wondered how gyroscopes work? Or even puzzled over the bounce of a spinning superball? In this short lecture some of the mysteries of spinning objects will be unravelled. We’ll have fun with lots of toys and hopefully throw one or two boomerangs – without breaking any windows!
Tuesday 22nd June 2004. Joint Branch Social Event at the Heathcote Arms, Croft, Leicester. Apart from the date, arrangements are basically the same as last year. Meet by 6.30 p.m. in the Bar for a directed Walk and Quiz or 7.30 p.m. in the Skittle Alley.
