A Remarkable Thread, Peter Cooper
Abstract
This talk will reveal the remarkable fact that Mount Everest, digital logic, the feminist movement, a ship’s anchor, the Renault Laguna, the Times New Roman font, The Hunt for Red October and the Japanese Art of Origami are all linked by a simple, if not humble, piece of mathematics accessible to primary school children.
Peter has a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy from the University of Cambridge and has worked in Engineering for 32 years. Initially, at the University of Bath working on communications systems, in particular on low bit rate speech and word recognition systems. Subsequently, he moved to Plessey Naval Systems where he worked on modelling underwater systems, designing sonar signal and data processing algorithms and leading the Algorithm Research Group. Peter joined SEA in 1990 and has worked on sonar, radar, communications, electronic warfare and satellite systems. He has held many technical and managerial posts within the company before becoming Engineering Director in 2011. Peter is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and sits on a number of industrial advisory boards at the Universities of Bristol and Bath.
