Optimal Transport: Applications and Numerical Methods

18 January 2012, 6:00pm

Optimal Transport: Applications and Numerical Methods, Dr Jan Van Lent

Joint IMA/Words, OR Society event

Abstract

The mathematician and engineer Gaspard Monge started the field of optimal transport in 1781 with a publication investigating the most efficient way to transport soil from one site to another. This optimal transport problem has since found a wide range of applications. The development of applications and mathematical theory has increased significantly in recent decades.

In this talk I will introduce the optimal transport problem and its links to nonlinear optimisation, nonlinear partial differential equations and linear programming. I will discuss applications in grid generation, image processing and machine vision and I will outline efficient numerical methods for solving optimal transport problems.

Venue:  Room 2Q50/51, Q block, Frenchay Campus, UWE, Coldharbour Lane, Bristol

No charge is made to attend meetings and non-members are welcome.
