IMA Gold Medal Lecture 2023 – Modelling collective cell movement in biology and medicine


IMA Gold Medal Lecture 2023 – Modelling collective cell movement in biology and medicine to be given by Professor Philip Maini FRS FMedSci FIMA (University of Oxford).  Winner of the 2022 IMA Gold Medal.

Abstract

Collective movement is ubiquitous in nature, ranging from whale migration, flocks of starlings, fish schools, down to the cell and bacterial level. Understanding how groups of individuals coordinate their movement is an open question. Philip Maini has been exploring collective movement at the cell level in the context of developmental biology, repair and disease. He will show how, in a decade-long collaboration with developmental biologists, a combination of agent-based mathematical modelling and experimental validation has led to several new insights on the collective migration of cranial neural crest cells. This is important in its own right, as well as serving as a powerful model paradigm for collective movement in general. He will then use individual-based modelling and coarse-graining to derive a novel partial differential equation model system for cell movement inspired by angiogenesis, the process by which new blood vessels form in wound healing and cancer. He will show that this model, while being very different in form to the classical snail-trail model for angiogenesis, can exhibit similar behaviour, raising the question of model comparison and identifiability.
