Applications will be considered at the next Schools & Further Education Committee meeting in October 2024, with the intention of the successful applicants attending their first meeting in February 2025.
The purpose of the Committee is to consider matters relating to teaching mathematics in schools and further education, as well as the broader context in which this sits. The Committee works alongside the IMA Higher Education Committee to consider the interface between schools/FE and HE mathematics.
The aims / responsibilities of the Committee include but are not limited to:
- Advise the IMA Honorary Education Secretary and IMA Council on matters relating to schools and FE mathematics.
- Formulate and draft policy and recommendations on matters relating to schools and FE mathematics, for example qualification reviews, use of technology.
- Interact and establish working relationships with Committees with similar remit across the sector including the Mathematical Association, Association of Teachers of Mathematics, Academy of Mathematical Sciences, ACME, JMC.
- Award of IMA grants for educational activities in schools.
- Promote the value and benefits of IMA membership to teachers of mathematics.
Additional Information:
- Membership of the Committee is open to people who teach/have taught in school and Further Education (FE) or who have an interest in education policy relating to pre-Higher Education mathematics.
- Members of the Committee will normally be IMA members, of any grade.
- Membership is for three years with the option of being renewed for a further three years.
- There will be three meetings a year, normally in October, February and June, of which one will normally be held in person and one of which will be a joint meeting with the IMA’s Higher Education Committee.
- Members are required to attend on a regular basis.
- Attendance can be in-person or online, though there is an expectation that members attended in-person at least once in the academic year.
- All reasonable travel expenses will be met.
- Engagement in e-discussion and e-consultation between meetings, along with the drafting of consultation responses is an important aspect of the commitment.
