Statistics and machine learning in society – A talk for the IMA East Midlands Branch, delivered by Katie Severn
Abstract
In today’s world, data is being collected at an unprecedented rate, serving a vast array of applications. As a statistician I use data myself all the time, but even in other disciplines and careers, both in industry and academia, it is very likely data is being used to help inform decisions. Therefore, it is really important we know how we can use data in a fair and equitable way that will benefit society. This presentation will introduce common machine learning frameworks and outline essential considerations for ethical data use, including selecting appropriate datasets, collecting data responsibly, and evaluating models for fairness. I will illustrate the potential consequences of unethical data use through real-world examples and discuss how it can impact individuals and communities. Additionally, I will share insights from my own research, showcasing how data can be harnessed to address societal challenges and drive positive change.
No charge is made to attend meetings; non-IMA members are welcome.
The talk is coordinated locally by Dr Tom Bennison.
