Liquid Magnets – A Biased Story of 50 Years of Research on Ferrofluids and Magnetic Nanoparticles


A seminar to be given by Dr Patrick Ilg, hosted by the IMA London & South East Branch.

Abstract

First synthesised around 50 years ago by NASA, magnetic nanoparticles and ferrofluids, with their fascinating combination of magnetic and fluid properties, have opened novel technical and biomedical applications, which in turn sparked the interest of more and more researchers.

In this talk, Patrick will give an overview of some selected research directions on magnetic nanoparticles and ferrofluids from a mathematical modelling perspective, demonstrating that this field sits on the intersection of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and statistical physics as well as micromagnetics. Particular emphasis will be paid to dynamic phenomena such as the nonequilibrium magnetisation dynamics and magnetoviscous effects. Starting from early theories of rotating dipoles, he will sketch more recent works that go beyond this restrictive assumption, as well as applications of stochastic thermodynamics and hybrid fluid simulations. Finally, he will outline open questions in the field and current research directions, showing that the story of magnetic nanoparticles and ferrofluids is far from finished.

Dr Patrick Ilg

Dr Ilg has been an associate professor for the theory of soft matter in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Reading since 2014, but before this was based in Berlin and Zurich. His interests include structure, dynamics and transport in soft matter systems, nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and systematic coarse graining and interface and boundary phenomena.
