What’s normal about numbers? A talk by Dr Charles Walkden (University of Manchester)

Abstract

If you pick a number at random, what would you typically expect it to look like?  Why does look more ‘typical’ than  or the number (the base of natural logarithms)?  And what connects butterflies, card shuffles and abstract problems in number theory?

Dynamical systems – popularly known as chaos theory – is the study of how mathematical systems evolve in time.  From its early beginnings studying physical systems, particularly in Newtonian mechanics, dynamical systems now spans across many areas of both pure and applied mathematics.  In this talk, we’ll see how classical constructions in chaotic dynamical systems can be linked to questions in number theory, and how it easily leads to interesting but (as yet) unsolved problems.
