Early Career Mathematicians Committee Role
As and when required, the ECM Committee may co-opt non-elected members of the ECM group to get involved and help support the development of the group.
James completed his MMath degree at the University of Sussex in 2016 and then completed his PhD at the University of Sussex in 2020. His PhD was in the field of scientific computing and numerical analysis, in particular focusing on the finite element approximation of evolving surfaces and partial differential equations on evolving surfaces with application to the rice blast fungus. He is now a postdoctoral research assistant at the University of Sussex and is a member of the Madzvamuse team who are currently aiding the NHS and Local Authorities in understanding the impact of COVID-19 within the Sussex region, and providing continuous support in modelling scenarios for the forecasting of healthcare demand and capacity within the Sussex region. He is also the backend developer of their (beta stage) semi-commercialised translational-visual toolkit, called Halogen, built for the NHS and Local Authorities to use the research they have produced without needing to understand the underlying mathematics. He has a real passion for mathematics which can make an impact in real-life, he enjoys the challenge of mathematical modelling and applying numerical methods to solving resulting problems.
He joined the IMA in 2019 when he set his eyes on academia being his future, and he is looking forward to working with the committee to network, set up events, and help other early career mathematicians meet their potential.
