On behalf of everyone at the IMA we are saddened by the news that our former President, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh has passed away. His Royal Highness was President of the Institute of Mathematics during 1976-1977, pictured below chairing a meeting of the Institute’s Council in 1976 at Buckingham Palace.
The foreword that His Royal Highness signed for the First issue of Teaching Mathematics and its Applications: An International Journal of the IMA, Volume 1, Issue 1, 1982 read as follows:
“A talent for mathematics, like a talent for music or painting, is not given to everyone. Those who are lucky enough to have a talent for mathematics are presented with a very wide choice of opportunities in which they can exploit their talents to their advantage, but only if they apply their talents to the problems of the real world will they also be able to make a contribution to the community as a whole.
I hope the regular publication of ‘The Teaching of Mathematics and its Applications’ will help to focus attention on the important social contributions that can be made by applied mathematics.”
