Abstract
In the Gambler’s Ruin problem we are concerned with the likelihood of a player becoming bankrupt given an initial resource and a chance of winning a single “bet”. Typically, a player competes against an entity that is theoretically represented by opponent or opponents with an infinite resource, for instance, a player playing the stock market or even a lottery game. However, the motivation of this research was not to model the behaviour of a gambler per se, but the generic behaviour of players in the business and social environment where over time new opponents can emerge and existing one removed.
Nira Chamberlain’s PhD thesis was concerned with extending the Gambler’s Ruin problem to account for such competitive behaviour. In order to do this, it is necessary to adapt the Gambler’s Ruin problem so it can be played over networks.
