Using Fractals to Approximate Real River Beds, a talk by Elysia Barker (Manchester Metropolitan University)
Abstract
Brownian Motion is similar to diffusion in a sense that particle movements are independent of one another. Fractional Brownian Motion is a generalisation of Brownian Motion where the particles need not be independent and form a trend. Using this as an advantage, Fractional Brownian Motion can be used to generate bed topography which closely resembles the real world. A method is developed to create an efficient bed topography generator for simulations over fluids to assist in simulating over terrain which is difficult to accurately measure.
About the Speaker
Elysia Barker is a PhD student at Manchester Metropolitan University, specialising in Computational Hydrodynamics. She teaches on the first year of both the Mathematics and Computing Undergraduate degree courses as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant and tutors Mathematics privately for students at GCSE and A-level. Elysia is also a member of the North West branch of the IMA committee. In her first year of her Undergraduate degree, she began doing extra work along side a lecturer in the Mathematics department which led her to a spot presenting at an international CFD conference in Beijing, China, where she was asked to take her work on to PhD once she graduated from her Undergraduate degree. Elysia aims to complete her PhD and go on to further research into the area.
