2024 marks three key milestones in the Institute’s history: our 60th anniversary, the 100th anniversary of the birth of first President Sir James Lighthill and the 20th anniversary of the Early Career Mathematicians committee. Join us for a special event to highlight these important occasions and celebrate the achievements of our members.
We’ll be hosting a variety of talks from Government, Knowledge Exchange, EDI, Social Challenges, to Combatting Maths Anxiety and much more! We will also be inviting our Past Presidents to join the guests for a light lunch and refreshments to accompany our networking sessions, encouraging discussion and questions!
The IMA Early Careers Mathematicians (ECM) committee will be hosting a parallel panel session featuring themes such as becoming a professional mathematician, what is data science and what does a Maths Career look like? The committee will be on hand to answer questions on past activities and our future aspirations. There will be an opportunity to contribute ideas and discussions for future events.

Professor Charlotte Watts
Is a British mathematician, epidemiologist, and academic. Since 2006, she has been Professor of Social and Mathematical Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Dr Joanna Jordan
Is a freelance mathematics knowledge exchange specialist. Previously, as the Manager of the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry, she led engagement with industry partners, and as Manager of the Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation she set up a new mathematical sciences knowledge exchange team. She served on the Expert Review Committee for the 2018 Bond Review, and was an Impact Assessor for REF2021. Joanna is one of the UK’s Knowledge Exchange Hub for Mathematical Sciences’ KE Super Champions, a Recognised Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP), and a member of EPSRC’s Strategic Advisory Team for Mathematical Sciences.
Professor Veronica Bowman OBE
Is a Fellow of Data Science at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. She specialises in uncertainty calculation and communication and Bayesian inference. In particular, she has spent many years applying Bayesian methodology and data fusion techniques to real decisions, working with academia to enable decision making under uncertainty. Recently she led the development of the CrystalCast system, which provides uncertainty analysis and model combination, and formed the backbone of the system used to combine academic models for the government response to COVID19. Her current work focusses on delivering impact from digital twins for defence.
Professor Hannah Fry
Is the IMA President for 2024 to 2025. She is a professor in the mathematics of cities at University College London. Hannah is an author and presenter, who hosts numerous podcasts and television shows.
