Join us to celebrate 100 years since the birth of Sir James Lighthill FRS, Founder and first President of the IMA on Friday 13 September 2024 at the University of Manchester, within the Department of Mathematics.
Sir James was undoubtedly one of the most prominent and influential applied mathematicians of the second half of the 20th century, and his research continues to have enormous influence in applied mathematics, engineering, physics and beyond.
The day will consist of six talks by Professors Nigel Peake CMath FIMA (Cambridge), Aimee Morgans FREng (Imperial),
C. John Chapman CMath FIMA (Keele), Ted Johnson (UCL), Anne Juel (Manchester) and Tim Pedley FRS CMath FIMA (Cambridge) who will reflect on the influence and legacy of Sir James Lighthill across distinct branches of applied mathematics, focused around fluid mechanics.
The day will conclude with a panel discussion led by Professors Chris Budd OBE CMath FIMA (Bath), Anna Scaife (Manchester), Catherine Powell (Manchester) and Steve Furber CBE FRS FREng (Manchester) on recent progress in the area of artificial intelligence (AI), and in particular on the influence and effect of the 1973 report Sir James was commissioned to write about AI, which resulted in a so-called ‘AI Winter’. A dinner will follow after the end of the meeting.
