IMA Statement on Recent Unrest in the UK

The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is deeply saddened by the recent events of unrest across the UK following the tragic incidents in Southport. We stand firmly against all forms of racism, discrimination, and violence that seek to divide our communities.

As an organisation dedicated to the advancement of mathematics, we recognise the vital role that equity, diversity and inclusion play in fostering innovation and understanding within our field. We remain committed to creating a welcoming environment for all, where every individual is valued and respected, regardless of their background.

We encourage our members and the wider community to stand together during these challenging times, to support one another, and to engage in peaceful and constructive dialogue. The mathematical sciences have the potential to contribute to understanding and addressing societal challenges, and we remain dedicated to using our collective expertise to work towards a more just and equitable society.

We will continue to support initiatives that promote inclusivity and understanding within both our organisation and the communities we serve.
