Designing Assessment to Promote Students’ Wellbeing

The University of Greenwich hosted this workshop on 10 July 2024 at the University of Greenwich in London: it was attended by 39 participants from 16 UK and Irish universities.

The morning session, presented by Gwen Thomas (Greenwich), Noel-Ann Bradshaw (Greenwich) and Robyn Goldsmith (Lancaster) provided some personal experience and context on supporting neurodivergent students and support for mental health. After lunch there were four sessions in which speakers shared aspects of their assessment practice, with Sue Pawley (Open), Brendan Masterson, Alison Megeney and Nick Sharples (Middlesex), Woju Majin (Sheffield) and Tony Mann (Greenwich).

The workshop finished with time for discussion and feedback from all the participants. Many participants felt that assignments involving reflective writing are beneficial and that there is a need to rethink the role of traditional examinations. The post-workshop survey indicated that participants found the event very useful.

A fuller report on the workshop has been submitted to the journal MSOR Connections.
