Mindsets, Emotions and Goals in University Mathematics Students
Abstract
In this talk we explore the mindsets, emotions and goals of 2nd and 3rd year University Mathematics Students and how they may differ for students with varying levels of representation in University Mathematics. We look at whether certain mindsets emotions and goals of students are related to their desire to ‘remain in mathematics’ through a career or through Postgraduate Research.

Holly Justice, University of Nottingham (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/Mathematics/people/holly.justice)
Holly is a third year PhD student in Mathematics Education at the University of Nottingham. She is particularly interested in capturing the experiences of students who are underrepresented in mathematics. She work with national datasets to understand when and why students stop studying mathematics and uses smaller scale surveys to try to understand students’ experiences relating to feelings and motivation to study whilst at university.
Holly’s fun fact: she spend a lot of time in the gym and enjoys powerlifting.
