The IMA welcomes the publication of the interim report of the Curriculum and Assessment Review, to which it contributed evidence in autumn 2024. We are pleased to see the approach of refining curriculum and assessment based on evidence while maintaining what is already working well. We strongly agree with the indications in the interim report that the current GCSE maths resit policy needs to be revisited, as evidence shows it is not working well for young people. We also agree that curriculum and assessment reforms should help address inequities, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND, but urge the review not to trade this off against providing stretch for the highest attainers. We note the need identified to prepare young people for an AI future.
Mathematics is at the heart of AI, and it is important that the UK develops sufficient young people with advanced maths skills to inform the next phase of development of AI. Finally, we encourage the panel to consider the importance of mathematics in the understanding of how to work with data – i.e. the need for Data Education within the curriculum.
