From Finding Hidden Treasure to Aiding Humanitarian Landmine Detection – The Mathematics of Metal Detection


A talk given by Professor Paul Ledger, Professor of Applied Mathematics at University of Leicester.

Abstract

Locating and identifying metallic objects is important for security screening, humanitarian demining of areas of former conflict, mineral prospecting, locating items of archaeological significance in archaeology as well as hunting for buried treasure. Metal detectors offer a low-cost and portable technique for finding hidden metallic objects, but there are challenges in identifying the object’s shape and material properties and discriminating between small objects close to the surface and large object buried at greater depths.

To help overcome these challenges, I will talk about recent mathematical developments that allow signals in metal detectors to be understood in terms of characterisations of objects that produced them. I will also talk about algorithms for their computation and the application of machine learning for identifying hidden objects.

Bio

Paul Ledger (https://le.ac.uk/people/paul-david-ledger) works at the interface of applied and computational mathematics, computational science and engineering. Over the last 25 years, he has established a national and international reputation for his work on the computational solution of coupled physics and inverse problems in applied science and engineering, with expertise in electromagnetism, mechanics and accurate computational solution schemes. He has held academic positions in Engineering at Swansea University and in Mathematics at Keele University. He joined the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Leicester as a Professor of Applied Mathematics in August 2024.

Doors will open at 7pm and the talk (30min talk) will start at 7:15pm. The event will be followed by an informal dinner at a local restaurant at 8pm.
