Fifth Employers’ Forum: Motivating and Rewarding Chartership – 23 February 2016

The IMA’s Employers’ Forum series continued with its fifth instalment focusing on Charterships.  The forum was hosted by Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at the Defence Capability Centre (DCC) at Defence Academy site at Shrivenham on Tuesday 23 February 2016 and had a great blend of attendees from industry, academia and commerce.  The day began with our host for the day Dr Karen White Principal Scientist and Senior Mentor for Mathematics at Dstl welcoming the delegates to the forum and Dstl and outlining the activities for the day.

The programme for the day comprised of a good mix of speakers this included talks and presentations from; Dr John Meeson the Assistant Director at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications who outlined Motivating and Rewarding Chartership the IMA perspective, both Dr Heather Tewkesbury Business Development Director at Smith Institute and Ed Rochead from Dstl highlighted the relevance of Chartership to career development,  Mike Lane from Dstl provided a wider understanding of the workings of Dstl and the importance of professional mathematicians within the defence industry, and Professor David Delpy the Chair of the Defence Scientific Advisory Council presented DSAC and Dstl after the Science Capability Review.

The speakers provided a background for the afternoon’s facilitated group discussions, these discussed were also informed by a pre-event survey of five questions about the motivation and reward of Chartership, CPD and organisational practice. The wide ranging discussions explored the importance of Chartership and how employers, and the IMA, could encourage and support applications for Chartered Mathematician status.  Outcome of these workshop discussions can be found below.

The afternoon also included an opportunity for a guided tour of military vehicles and equipment by an amazing group of military personal.  This tour included the opportunity to try on and feel the weight of the equipment worn in the field and to explore various military vehicles.  This hands on tour provided a fascinating insight into the equipment required, the construction and armaments of modern military vehicles, and the extraordinary personnel who use them.
