Join the Conversation on UK School & FE Mathematics – Committee Applications Now Open


Are you committed to supporting mathematics education in schools and further education in the UK? Would you like to contribute to national discussions and help shape the future of mathematics teaching? The IMA Schools & Further Education Committee is currently welcoming applications for new members.

Applications will be considered at our next meeting in February 2026, with successful applicants invited to attend their first meeting in June 2026.

About the Committee
The Committee addresses key issues in mathematics education across secondary schools and further education, considering both classroom practice and the wider educational context. We work in close collaboration with the IMA Higher Education Committee to support the transition between school/FE and university-level mathematics.

Our Work Includes:

  • Advising the IMA Honorary Education Secretary and Council on matters relating to school and FE mathematics.
  • Drafting policy and recommendations on matters relating to school and FE mathematics, for example qualification reviews, use of technology.
  • Building relationships with other sector organisations such as the Association for Mathematics in Education (AMiE), the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, ACME, and JMC.
  • Promoting the benefits of IMA membership to mathematics teachers.

Membership Information

  • Open to individuals who currently teach or have taught in schools or FE in the UK, or who have a strong interest in UK education policy relating to pre-Higher Education mathematics.
  • Members are typically IMA members of any grade.
  • Membership is for a three-year term, with the option to renew for a further three years.
  • The Committee meets three times a year (usually October, February, and June). One meeting is typically held in person, and one is a joint meeting with the Higher Education Committee.
  • Regular attendance is expected, including at least one in-person meeting per academic year.
  • Reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed.
  • Members are expected to contribute to online discussions and consultations between meetings, including drafting responses to sector-wide consultations.
