New IMA President 2026-27, Heather Tewkesbury


We are delighted to welcome Dr Heather Tewkesbury CMath FIMA as our new President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, succeeding Professor Hannah Fry.

Professor Fry, who has served as IMA President since 2024, warmly welcomed Heather’s appointment:

The nomination was warmly received by our Council, many of whom know Heather through her active engagement with the community. I have no doubt she will be an excellent President. Heather brings over 20 years of experience in the mathematical sciences, having led the Smith Institute as CEO and now serves as Chief of Strategic Relationships. She also serves on the Executive Board of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, focusing on business, industry, and government engagement, and is a Trustee of the Operational Research Society.

On her appointment, Heather shared:
“I’m delighted to be taking on the position of President of the IMA following Hannah’s term. I’m keen that the role of the mathematical sciences in business and government becomes more visible, and I look forward to helping the IMA build that visibility. The IMA has been my professional home for 25 years, and I’m excited to represent it as President.”

Heather’s track record of fostering positive engagement in technical teams ensures the IMA remains a hub for collaboration and innovation.

Congratulations once again to Dr Heather Tewkesbury on this appointment. The IMA looks forward to continuing its mission under Heather’s guidance.
