On inequality in engineering, or am I bound to fail? A talk by John Craske (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London)
Abstract
Inequalities abound in practical design problems. From the prediction of worst-case scenarios, stability and control, to the laws of thermodynamics, inequalities allow us to address uncertainty and optimality. It is indeed curious and inspiring that inequalities provide a beautiful link between a rich world of abstract mathematical ideas and utilitarian tools for modelling and approximation in engineering. To illuminate the opportunities that exist for engineers to use and think about inequalities, I will discuss examples drawn from flow networks, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and Hilbert’s seventeenth problem.
