How much CPD should I do?
The minimum CPD requirement is 50 hours over the reporting year period of which at least 40 hours should involve activities with a mathematical basis or content.
The mathematically-based CPD should consist of at least three different activities or themes to ensure a broad perspective rather than an in-depth appreciation of a limited topic. Actual professional development may well exceed the 50 hours: for example to gain competence in a foreign language or a complex mathematical software package may well require more than 50 hours in a year, but one activity cannot meet the year’s full CPD requirement.
We advise you to maintain a career logbook in parallel with the CPD record. This should contain details of work completed including papers and technical reports, project and contract involvement, achievements, personal contribution to successful outcomes, responsibility for technical, budgetary and staff management.
The Scheme
Overall, you should record a minimum of 50 hours of CPD of which a minimum of 40 hours should have a mathematical content. Ideally, your professional development should comprise a range of activities to provide a balanced profile. In summary, your record should include a listing of activities in two categories:
- Mathematically related (formal & informal) 40 hours (minimum)
- Non-mathematical CPD 10 hours (minimum)
Item 1 should consist of at least three separate activities, although something like a full or part time degree course would consist of a number of separate topics.
Members may exceed the total time allocation of 50 hours. Record the total time spent in an activity, as well as the actual time devoted to CPD. If these guidelines are not clear, remember that the objective is to have a balanced mix of activities.
