Early Career Mathematicians Committee Role

The Immediate Past Chair’s role is to support and advise the new chair and committee, and to provide continuity in the running of the committee and the group as a whole.

Maciej Matuszewski completed an MSci in Physics with Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London in 2014 and a PhD at the Durham University Department of Mathematical Sciences and Centre for Particle Theory in 2019. He is currently working as Technical Manager (Research and Teaching Facilities) at Durham Maths, in which role he assists with managing the department’s databases and computer network, but also has undergraduate teaching responsibilities.

Maciej was previously on the IMA Early Career Mathematician’s Committee for three years until the end of 2020 – as Conference Leader Designate, Conference Leader and finally a co-opted member. As part of this role he helped organise IMA ECM conferences at Durham, UCL, and Lancaster Universities. He currently also holds the positions of Co-Secretary of the North East Branch and Treasurer of the Early Career Member’s Group of the Institute of Physics, and has been heavily involved in outreach events for Durham University. In his spare time, Maciej enjoys reading, hiking, and helping to organise SF conventions.

I was honoured to have first been elected to the IMA ECM committee four years ago and greatly enjoyed my previous work with the committee. My experiences confirmed my long-held belief that the ECM group is a fantastic resource for our early career members and a wonderful showcase of the IMA for those mathematicians who are considering joining, and we need to do more to make it more even more visible and welcoming to mathematicians around the country. I would love to be able to return and take on the position of Vice Chair and Chair Designate to be able to build on our successes so far and work to help more early career mathematicians. I want to focus on expanding the events that we run and the resources that we provide. Our ECM conferences are great events and I want to work with our new Event Leader and Event Leader Designate to investigate the possibility of being able to bring similar content to more people through smaller, more informal local talks throughout the country, particularly using the experience we all developed during these few years of running remote virtual events. I also want to expand the information and guidance that the group provides to early career mathematicians on our website, and investigate whether we can set up online networking sessions for our members. I want to make sure that the ECM group is open and appealing to people in all areas of mathematics – whether this is academia, industry or teaching – and I want to work to help build links between people in all these areas. I will use my experience and connections to work to set up collaborations – running joint activities and sharing best practice – with other learned societies and professional bodies, such as the Institute of Physics, whose members are likely to have mathematical interests. I will also collaborate with more local organisations, including universities and businesses. I believe my outreach work with Durham University has given me great experience in this area. I also believe it is crucial that we are welcoming and supportive of people coming from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in mathematics. I will work to ensure that all our events and written material showcase a diverse range of people working in mathematics. I believe all of this should be underpinned by good communication with our members. I will work to continue our efforts to improve how we get feedback on our activities and will seek suggestions for new activities. I hope that this will attract more members to our group, and make it a larger and more vibrant community. Above all, I want to make sure that all our members feel that they are a crucial part of this community, and that they feel it is being run for them and that they have a voice in how it is being run.
