IMA Mathematics 2020 Online Series – Week One, Presidential Address 2020

Week One – Nira Chamberlain – Presidential Address — Building a Powerful Mathematical Identity!

For a number of years, the IMA has been running a series of conferences to promote mathematics with the aim of demonstrating to both mathematicians and non-mathematicians the many uses of modern mathematics.

This summer, due to Covid19, IMA Mathematics 2020 will be run virtually in a series of weekly two hour events, starting on Tuesday 14 July 2020 with the IMA Presidential Address. Other talks will cover areas such as defence, regulation, privacy enhancing technologies and modelling in industrial maintenance and reliability. You can watch the full video of this talk with closed captions below.

Abstract

“When I stand at the foot of the Eiffel Tower and look up, I see the names of mathematicians. When I stand at the foot of Big Ben, I see none. Mathematicians should not be afraid to be, or apologise for being, a mathematician. Mathematicians must know their value and worth in any arena they enter.

In this talk I will discuss lessons learnt from my mathematical journeys, from Academia to Industry, from Engineering to Retail, and finally from debating with Radio DJs and to challenging leading politicians.  As a mathematics community we not only need to build a powerful mathematical identity, we need to embrace it!”
