What are the Fibonacci numbers? Why do they appear in flowers fruit and vegetables?

Why are they so good in the mathematics classroom for the keen and not so keen student?
Dr Ron Knott was a lecturer in the Departments of Mathematics and Computing Science at the University of Surrey. He still develops a large mathematics website on the Fibonacci Numbers and other popular mathematical topics.
