For a number of years, the IMA has been running a series of conferences to promote mathematics with the aim of demonstrating to both mathematicians and non-mathematicians the many uses of modern mathematics. Following last summer’s very successful IMA Mathematics 2020 series collaboration with the Newton Gateway to Mathematics, we are pleased to announce two events for 2021 taking place this May.
The first talk at the 6th May event will be from Nick Higham who has been awarded the Gold Medal award in recognition of outstanding contributions to mathematics and its applications. This will be followed by Jane Leeks and David Abrahams discussing future developments in mathematical sciences knowledge exchange.
On Tuesday 25th May, we will have two talks which feature the work of V-KEMS (Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in Mathematical Sciences). Presentations will feature the work of two very successful virtual study groups, which ran in the earlier this year, on Reducing the Risk of Covid-19 Transmission on Trains and Modelling Solutions to the Impact of COVID-19 on Cardiovascular Waiting Lists. Nick Higham – Gold Medallist Talk – Communicating Applied Mathematics in 2021
Writing papers for journals is the main way in which mathematics researchers communicate their work. Articles for magazines, such as Mathematics Today, and blog posts, provide a vehicle for more expository presentations of research. These outlets can reach a wider audience, including practitioners who do not keep up with the research literature, and rapid feedback can be obtained. I will discuss my experience of writing articles and blog posts, focusing on several examples of research that has resonated with a wider audience. I will also discuss the “What Is” series of blog posts about topics in numerical analysis and related areas that I have been writing weekly for over a year. Finally, I touch on an important aspect of workflow: how to navigate the many file formats required by different publication platforms (docx, html, md, tex, txt, etc.).
David Abrahams and Jane Leeks – Future Developments and Directions in Mathematical Sciences Knowledge Exchange?
The UK’s mathematical sciences research output is set to expand dramatically over the next five years, with £60m of additional funds being distributed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) per annum over the period 2020-2025. As part of this unique investment, the Isaac Newton Institute (INI) has received a £10m increase in its primary grant funding, effectively doubling its yearly income. This new money will allow a step-change in the activity of INI, and in particular, through the Newton Gateway to Mathematics, will give knowledge exchange with industry a significant boost. This will be delivered through expanded activity of the Gateway and a new national network of connected centres. This presentation will highlight the ways in which INI and the Newton Gateway to Mathematics will not only be able to add impact to its increasing number and variety of its research programmes, but also provide enhanced KE support to the wider community. As well as maintaining their underpinning role for the Virtual Forum for Knowledge Exchange in the Mathematical Sciences (V-KEMS) programme, the Gateway will continue to work with the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) to develop and deliver a UK connected-centres network to foster new collaborations and engagement opportunities
