Abstract
The world around us is complex: it has many interdependent components. Mathematics is the key to understanding, predicting, controlling and designing complex systems. I will describe how mathematics gives power to the popular concepts of emergence, tipping points and nudging. I will lay out a manifesto for how the IMA will contribute to the future of the nation.

IMA Careers Talk, Danielle Bewsher (University of Central Lancashire, Preston)
Danielle has been a Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Central Lancashire since September 2009. She is also a member of the solar physics research group which is part of the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute. She previously worked at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, where she was involved with calibrating the STEREO Heliospheric Imagers. She also held a European Space Agency External Fellowship at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA.
