Mathematics for Users and Mathematics for Makers, Professor Alexandre Borovik (University of Manchester)
Abstract
The speaker will discuss some general principles of mathematics education, touching, in particular, on such themes as:
- What is mathematics?
- What is mathematics education for?
- What are “Mathematics for Users” and “Mathematics for Makers”?
- What kind of mathematics education is needed for future teachers of mathematics?
He will be talking in a plain language carefully avoiding unnecessary mathematical terminology and even more so — political newspeak and bureaucratic jargon.
He will argue that mathematics teachers are ***makers*** of mathematics and therefore need to learn, and need to be taught, Mathematics for Makers.
